BIOCHEMICAL MARKERS ASSOCIATED WITH MORTALITY IN PATIENTS WITH YELLOW FEVER DURING THE 2017 OUTBREAK IN ESPÍRITO SANTO, BRAZIL

Yellow fever (YF) is caused by a virus of the genus Flavivirus and family Flaviviridae. The severe form of this disease is presents a classic triad: jaundice, hemorrhages and acute renal failure. Brazil experienced one of the largest outbreaks of sylvatic yellow fever transmission in its history during 2017. Correlate the origin of patients with YF and laboratory tests in the first week of hospitalization, as well as the outcome of discharge and death. Cross-sectional study, with samples obtained from the medical records of 18 patients treated at the Hospital Silvio Ávidos (HSA) with YF. The majority of those affected were male and resident of the rural area of Espírito Santo State. The mean length of hospital stay was seven days and 40% the patients died. Biochemistry analyses showed notable changes with an increase in levels of hepatic transaminases, urea and creatinine. Our data show that laboratory tests at first contact can prevent deaths of patients with YF.
